Phonics and Reading

Here is a brief outline about how we teach phonics and reading at Ravenhurst:

  • We use the ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics scheme. ‘Read Write Inc’ is a method of learning devised by Ruth Miskin which is centred around letter sounds and phonics and we use it here at Ravenhurst School to aid children in their literacy. We started the programme in September 2011.
  • Reading opens the door to learning. A child who reads a lot will become a good reader. A good reader will be able to read more challenging material. A child who reads challenging material is a child who will learn and the more a child learns, the more he/she will want to find out.
  • Using ‘Read Write Inc’, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.

When using ‘Read Write Inc’ to read the children will:

  • learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.
  • learn to read words using Fred Talk.
  • read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out.
  • show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.

What does this mean for Ravenhurst School:

In year two: All year two children are continuing to read with the current ORT programme and will have an ORT book to take home each week for their reading. They will have a daily ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics lesson.

In year one: Children who are blending sounds independently within their reading will have a ‘Read Write Inc’ book to take home alongside an ORT book. A few children cannot blend sounds and they will take home weekly spellings to practise blending at home. When they are able to blend, they will take home a ‘Ditty’ book. All year one children have a daily ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics and literacy lesson.

In Foundation Stage: Children have started with picture-based books to encourage speaking skills whilst talking about the pictures. Children will move on to ‘Dittys’ from ‘Read Write Inc’ and will progress through the scheme. All Foundation Stage children have a daily phonics lesson.

In KS2: The majority of children will have learnt all their sounds by the end of year 2 and become fluent at blending and segmenting them. Some children may need to carry on learning and practising their phonics and this is catered for in KS2, usually as an intervention group.
